I have arrived safely, and am installed in the top garrett of my lovely host family's home. It is less than a block away from the seafront, and is in a nice quiet area of the city.
I had completely forgotten that the day I was arriving - November 5 - was Guy Fawkes night. Everyone lights huge bonfires and sets off fireworks to celebrate King James' discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. I arrived just in time to catch the celebration, which was a lovely way to spend my first night in Britain.
